Slow notes from the Danish coast: ferries, islands, weather and walking.

What I carry on a coastal day walk

2 February 2026

The Danish coast is gentle on the map and rough in the wind. Most of my kit is about staying warm and dry rather than about distance.

A windproof shell matters more than a thick jacket. A thin wool layer, a hat, and gloves even in May. Shoes that do not mind wet sand. A paper map of the area, because coverage is patchy on some stretches and the battery drains fast in the cold.

Food is simple: rye bread, cheese, an apple, a thermos of coffee. Bins are rare on the beaches, so everything goes home in the bag it came in.
